What is form 6251?
To claim the exemption, determine the difference between your minimum taxable income and the exempt amount that you claim on Form 6251. Then add back any amount of income from self-employment that might be reported. For example, if you are single and were paid 6,500 during the year, Form 6251 would report your income as zero, but you would be able to claim the full 2,550 AMT exemption on your return. The self-employed worker gets the full 1,450 AMT exemption. If you earn more than 127,200 a year, add back any amount of income from self-employment that might be reported. For example, assume that you are married with two children and have made 70,000 in the past year. If you are eligible for the full AMT exemption, you would have a zero taxable income of zero and your return would be free of AMT as long as you do.
